Apple - High Density and Variety trials (PHDP)
Perennial Horticulture Development Project: Naseer Ahmad “Omarkhel”, Ahmad Shah “Zarghon”
Early results of high density apple trial plots in Badam Bagh, Afghanistan.
The Perennial Horticulture Development Project (PHDP) established an intensive apple demonstration orchard in March 2008, with eight varieties of apple on dwarfing rootstocks M9 and B9. The trees were provided by nurseries supported by an Aga Khan Foundation programme, and were generally of unbranched “whips”.
The orchard was designed to demonstrate the use of dwarfing rootstocks with a range of mostly recently introduced and untested (in Afghanistan) varieties and clones in a moderately intensive system that was a new concept in Afghanistan.
