In Balkh, JDA has three sites, at which two sites CABI’s recommendations will be followed. This consists of field sanitation and insecticide-protein bait spray. Cue lure has been deployed at all three sites. At one site in Balkh JDA has encouraged the farmer to bag melons. Bags made from cotton and sugar bags (woven plastic) have already been distributed and farmer feedback has been positive as they have seen the melons grow normally from a walnut size at time of bagging. Farmers at first thought that bagging melons would prevent fruit from developing. However, the farmer is not interested in bagging more fruit as he says he doesn’t have time. There are also economic issues to this approach, which are detailed later in this report. At all sites in Balkh JDA is encouraging field sanitation- removal of infested fruit as part of control....
