Report - Melon Fly Control - Results & Recommendations

Prepared by Mark Henning - JDA International - December 3, 2007 JDA’s efforts in melon fly control research in Balkh, Jawzjan and Saripul have shown good results. A total of 36 ha across 3 provinces— Balkh, Jawzjan and Saripul, have been treated under JDA’s program. Under JDA’s program farmers had vastly better production and profitability compared to 2006. Farmers saw a 71 – 112% increase in their profit from melon production from 2006 to 2007. These results are due to proper insecticide application using the correct chemical and field sanitation. Compared to much of farmer’s current practice, JDA’s approach takes less of farmers’ time and money, and dramatically decreases their exposure to harmful pesticides. Through its’ field work with farmers JDA has shown that a short-term solution to melon fly control is very feasible and affordable for farmers in both irrigated and dryland melon production systems...
